SHIBARGHAN (PAN): Unknown gunmen shot dead an influential tribal elder in northern Jawzjan province, where a woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances, police said on Monday.
Police Chief Col. Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani told Pajhwok Afghan News the elder was killed last night in Qorbqa Chakush village of Mardyan district.
The motive behind the murder of Shah Murad remained unclear, but police had launched an investigation to identify and arrest the killers, he said.
Shah Murad had been active resolving people’s problems, the police official said.
The incident comes two days after a group of masked gunmen entered a house in Mughol village of Darzab district and killed Muhammad Barat, a government official, and his son, a national police officer.
In Shiberghan, the provincial capital, a 50-year-old woman was found hanged to death in Arabkhana area last night.
With faint marks visible around her neck, the corpse has been sent to a hospital for a post-mortem examination.
According to police, the victim’s husband said she had committed suicide, but her son Sharifullah, who lives separately from his parents, accused his father and a brother of killing his mother.
The police chief said they had taken into custody her husband and a son in connection with the mysterious death.
It was 18th woman to be killed or committed suicide in Jawzjan so far this solar year.
A day earlier, a woman was found hanged to death inside her house in Alti village of Khwaja Shiberghan area. The 45-year-old woman left behind a daughter and two sons.

The rights official asked security organs to thoroughly investigate the latest incident and urged the judiciary to award the perpetrators a harsh punishment.
