Daily-use item rates unchanged in Kabul

KABUL): Prices of essential daily-use items remained unchanged during the outgoing week in the otherwise skittish Kabul market, wholesalers and retailers said on Thursday.

A 24-kg bag of best-quality rice cost 1,800afs a 50-kg sack of Pakistani sugar cost 1,750afs, a 49-kg bag of Pakistani flour 1,300afs and a 50-kg sack of sugar 1,700, the food traders’ union head said.

Fazlur Rahman told Pajhwok Afghan News a kg of Indonesian green tea was priced at 175afs, same quantity of African black tea at 210afs and a 5-litre tin of Momin Ghee at 400afs — same rates as last week’s.

But a retailer in the Kart-e-Seh area of Kabul, Khan Ali, sold a 49-kg bag of Pakistani flour for 1,400afs, a 50-kg sack of sugar for 1,900afs, a 49-kg bag of rice for 2,000afs. His rates for ghee and tea were also higher than wholesale prices.

Prices of petroleum products, liquefied gas and gold edged up in Kabul markets during the outgoing week, when rates of rice and ghee decreased, dealers said on Thursday.

One gram of Arabian gold cost 2,200 afghanis against its last week’s rate of 2,100afs and the same quantity of the Iranian variety priced at 1800afs against the previous 1700afs, a dealer, Abdul Basir told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Similarly, the prices of one litre of petrol and diesel also remained unchanged at 64afs each, said Fazal Hadi, in charge of a filling station Wazirabad area.

A Kolola Pushta-based gas dealer, Mohammad Sharif, said Thursday’s price of a kilo of liquefied gas stood at 53afs, registering an increase of three afghanis.

Per 560 kilograms of peeled oak worked out at 7,200afs and the same amount of cedar at 6,800afs, showing no change, said a stall owner in Dasht-i-Barchi area, Hamid.

One gram of Arabian gold sold for 2,200afs and the Iranian variety for 1,800afs, said a jeweller in the Lycee-i-Maryam neighbourhood, Abdul Basir.

Moneychanger Ahmad Shah said the buying rate of one US dollar was 57.60afs, while 1,000 Pakistani rupees accounted for 540afs. Last week’s exchange value of the dollar stood at 57.25afs and 1,000 Pakistani rupees at 542afs.
