Peace drive: Sharif to visit Kabul next week

ISLAMABAD (PAN-led peace and reconciliation process, an official said.

Foreign ministry spokesman Aizaz Chaudhry told Pakistani newspaper Dawn: “The visit is part of Pakistan’s continuing engagement with HPC for the facilitation of peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan.”

Led by its Chairman Salahuddin Rabbani, a five-member HPC team visited Islamabad from Tuesday to Thursday for talks on advancing the Afghan reconciliation process. The delegates met Sharif and his Advisor on Foreign Affairs and National Security Sartaj Aziz.

Pakistani officials would not confirm the delegation’s meeting with former Taliban Abdul Ghani Baradar, who was freed in September from jail in response to Kabul’s request.

But a private TV channel quoted an Afghan source as saying: “The Peace Council achieved its main objective to see Mullah Baradar.”  The Express Tribune reported the team wrapped up its three-day visit on a high note, gaining access to the senior Taliban leader.
