ISLAMABAD (PAN as long as an ongoing by the ruling party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province continues.
Backed by several right-wing political groups, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has been spearheading a protest in Peshawar and other parts of the province over the past few days against US drone strikes.
All Pakistan Transporters Owners Association President Haji Malik Khwaja Muhammad Khan told reporters late on Monday truckers had been informed they would be personally responsible for damages if they moved NATO supplies.
Ziaul Haq Sarhadi, a representative of the custom clearing agents, said Pak-Afghan trade had been affected by the protests. He explained 80 percent of shipments to Afghanistan had been shifted to Iran’s Port Bandar Abbas.
Also on Monday evening, the Torkham border crossing was reopened after intermittent closures over the past four days due to the Loya Jirga and PTI protests against drone attacks on targets on Pakistani soil.
The border was reopened and a large number of transit containers carrying fruits and vegetables, which had been stranded on both sides, were allowed to cross, a private TV channel reported. The Express Tribune quoted Torkham political administration official Amjad Khan as saying of NATO supply containers were also allowed to cross the border.
