KABUL): United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has reiterated his call that the increasing use of armed drones in the war on terrorism must be regulated and controlled under international law.
Ban renewed his position on the issue on Monday, five days after the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution that stressed operations by remotely-controlled aircraft must comply with international law.
According to the news agency Associated Press of Pakistan, the secretary-general told a news conference at the UN: “The operations of arms drones must strictly adhere to international law and international humanitarian law.” He deplored civilian casualties in drone strikes.
In September, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told the General Assembly the use of armed drones in border was a continued violation of his country’s territorial integrity and resulted in civilian casualties.
