Woman commits suicide due to poverty

SHIBERGHAN (PAN): A woman has committed suicide due to dire financial straits in northern Jawzjan province, an official said on Sunday.

Gul Jan, a mother of eight, hanged herself in the Saqz Kool village of Aqcha district on Saturday night, the crime branch chief said.

Capt. Abdul Latif told Pajhwok Afghan News the 38 years old was found hanged in her house. The woman, whose husband was disabled, ended it all because she could not buy a shroud for her mother-in-law who died recently.

District Hospital Director Dr. Najibullah, confirmed receiving the woman’s body. A forensic examination showed injuries to her neck caused by the rope.

A relative of the victim, Asadullah, said her mother-in-law’s funeral was funded by residents — something that forced the woman to commit suicide.
