Tight election security in Kabul promised

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Kabul police chief on Monday promised tight security around all polling stations during the April 5 presidential and provincial council elections.

Maj. Gen.  Mohammad Zahir told a press conference they had assessed the security situation for all polling stations in Kabul City and 14 police districts.

Police had taken the required measures to maintain security during the elections, he said, adding there won’t be any concerns even in most far-flung areas of Sarobi district.  

Security for elections would be as foolproof as it had been for the consultative Loya Jirga on the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) with the United States, he added.

Zahir said security forces had already started making arrangements to deal with possible threats during elections. However, he explained the situation in neighboring provinces had a direct impact on security in Kabul.

Security organs were supposed to submit an assessment to the Independent Election Commission (IEC), but due to unknown reasons, the report has been delayed. IEC has expressed concerns over the delay, saying it will affect the panel’s activities.

But the Ministry of Interior said there were no specific threats or challenges ahead. In a week’s time, a detailed report would be handed over to IEC, it added.
