KABUL Cup, an official said on Saturday.

The Afghans won the toss against the Lahore National Academy team and chose to bat in the 45 overs encounter at the Gaddafi Stadium on Friday, said Farid Hotak, the Afghanistan Cricket Board spokesman.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News Afghanistan set Pakistan a 279 runs target after playing all the stipulated overs and losing nine wickets.

Usman Ghani was a major contributor with 91 runs, followed by Mujtaba with a half century. Sharafuddin Ashraf hammered a quick-fire 44 runs off 20 balls for the visitors.

The Pakistanis succumbed to Afghanistan’s fierce bowling attack that saw all the batsmen going back to the pavilion for a paltry 81 in the 28th over — 197 runs short of the target.

Sharafuddin Ashraf took four wickets that earned him the man of the match award. Sherzad snatched three wickets and Farid Malik and Mujtaba shared one wicket apiece.

In the previous game last month, the Afghans stunned the Khan Research Laboratories, a first-class cricket side, which fell 214 runs short of the target. In that match, Farid Malik’s seven-wicket haul enabled Afghanistan to register a thumping victory.

Afghanistan had set Pakistan a 267 runs target, with Hashmatullah Shahidi hammering an unbeaten ton. In response, the Pakistanis were skittled out for 52 runs in the 18th over, with Ziaur Rahman grabbing two wickets.
