MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Nearly 350 families displaced by the conflict on Tuesday received assistance from two international donor agencies in northwestern Faryab province, an official said.
The aid included food and non-food items, provided by the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Norwegian Refugees Council (NRC), the refugee and repatriation director said.
Aqa Mohammad Rahim told Pajhwok the families had been displaced from Almar, Qaisar and Dawlatabad districts to Maimana, the provincial capital.
He said each family received four sacks of wheat, 20 kilogram of oil, 14 kilograms of peas, six carpets, two tarpaulins and a package of cooking materials.
Governor Mohammadullah Batash, welcoming the assistance, said the uprooted families were in dire need of such aid and his administration lacked funds to provide the families with relief goods.
One of the beneficiaries, Ainuddin, said: “This is for the first time I have received aid for my 13-member family. Ainuddin, who arrived with his family in Maimana from Almar district nine months ago, said no one else had assisted them so far.
He said the cash-strapped families paid 4,000 afghanis in rent to owners of houses they lived in. He said their only income source had been farming in the hometown.
The displaced families have asked the government to help them return to their previous homes.
Farah police chief, Brig Gen. Toryalai Abdyani, said police and other security organs had decided to launch a series of operations to drive insurgents from areas where the displaced families belonged to.
