MAIMANA (Pajhwok): At least 2,000 families displaced by heavy fighting between the Afghan security forces and militants in the Qaisar district of Faryab province need food, medicine and shelter, an official said on Monday.
Rahmatullah Turkistani, head of the provincial council, said the internally-displaced persons (IDPs) were living in other areas of the district in miserable condition amid extreme cold, with no proper food and shelter.
Abdul Jamil Saddiqui, the district chief, said the exact number of the IDPs was not clear but immediate assistance was needed to protect children, women and elderly in this cold.
But Abdul Sattar Bariz, Faryab deputy governor, said he had no exact figure about the displaced families and a fact finding delegation would be sent to the province to identify the number of the families.
After getting report about the strength of the displaced families, authorities would provide them with the needed facilities, he pledged.
