Aircraft repair workshop to be built in Kandahar

KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): An aircraft repair workshop — the first ever of its kind — would be built soon at the Kandahar International Airport, officials said on Friday.

The decision was taken at a meeting attended by Governor Toryalai Weesa, airport chief Ahmadullah Faizi, representatives of Canada-based SkyLink and Afghan Jet International Airlines.

In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, the airport chief said the airport that was built 60 years ago was in need of projects to provide modern-era services.

Senior aviation official Mohammad Shah Habibi told Thursday’s meeting about plans for building a major aircraft maintenance workshop in Kandahar.

The workshop would help Afghanistan obviate the need for sending airplanes abroad for repairs and maintenance, he said, adding the project involved a lot of expenses.

Afghan Jet International Airlines head Syed Salman Sadat announced his company, which launched flights to the province a year ago, would open its branch in Kandahar City.

Ahmadullah Faizi informed participants the FlyDubai Airlines would begin UAE-Kandahar flights in near future. Similarly, a Turkish company has agreed to operate Istanbul-Kandahar flights.

Governor Weesa promised hailed the maintenance workshop project as good news for Kandahar residents, asking the Afghan Jet Airlines to provide Kandaharis with more facilities than other companies.
