KABUL (Pajhwok): President Hamid Karzai on Thursday expressed optimism candidates would respect people’s verdict and accept results of the ballot scheduled to be held on Saturday.
The president made the remarks in his message, released by his office, ahead of presidential and provincial council elections.
Coming Saturday was of immense importance to Afghans who would cast their vote to elect their future leadership, which would help strengthen the democratic system, he remarked.
He added presidential candidates had spearheaded their election campaign throughout the country, which were attended by the people in large numbers. Masses’ participation in the campaign, he said, was a clear sign that people had respect for the country’s constitution.
“We, the people of Afghanistan, are going to elect our presidential and provincial council contenders for the third time (since 2001). The election is a befitting reply to those who want to sabotage our democratic right,” he observed.
He noted with satisfaction that “our brothers and sisters” got their voters’ cards with greater enthusiasm. Afghans would participate boldly in the ballot to thwart nefarious designs hatched by foreign intelligence, he added.
Lauding the role of security forces for tight security in the elections’ days, he said the nation should extend all out support to the law enforcement agencies and officials to meet any untoward incident.
He asked people to participate with zeal in the polls and caste vote in larger national interests.
He asked international observers to monitor the ballot process in a neutral way by keeping Afghanistan laws into consideration.
