Kabul, NATO must better manage border: Islamabad

ISLAMABAD (Pajhwok): The Foreign Office in Islamabad on Thursday urged Kabul administration to put in place strong measures for better management of the border between the two neighbouring countries and to check illegal cross-border movement.

The call comes as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif chaired a high-level security meeting at the PM House here. The meeting had decided to gradually continue peace talks with homegrown rebels operating along the Durand Line, nearly 2500 kilometers common border separating the two South Asian nations.

In a statement issued to Pajhwok, the Foreign Office said its spokesperson Tasnim Aslam told her weekly press conference that Pakistan forces must do the same on their side.  

Keen to introduce biometric system, Pakistan had established more than 12,000 posts to undertake surveillance, she said and added Islamabad wanted equally strong measures from NATO and Afghan sides for management of the border.

She also said her country had no favourites in the Afghan presidential elections and they would cooperate with the new leadership in that country. “:A stable and peaceful Afghanistan is in the interest of Pakistan,” Tasnim Aslam said.

She remarked peace in Afghanistan would not only help do away with terrorism but also open up new avenues of trade between South and Central Asian countries.
