MAIMANA (Pajhwok): A hundred rebels have been killed and wounded during a security operation in the Qaisar district of Faryab province, officials claimed on Wednesday.
As a result of the two-week military offensive, the main district bazaar and several villages including Turkmen, Timuri, Qapchaq, Barakzai, Ziaratgah, Ghaura, Zafran and Bedaki were cleared of militants.
Governor Mohammadullah Batash said 57 militants were killed and 43 others wounded during the operation codenamed “Sacrifice”. He hailed the offensive as a huge success.
Speaking at a ceremony in honour of the Afghan National Army (ANA), he said four policemen and a soldier were also killed during the military drive.
Police said the dead insurgents included commanders Juma Gul, Mullah Sultan, Maulvi Shakoor, Mullah Wali, Mullah Abdullah, Qari Farid Attiqullah and Mullah Rabi.
But Qaisar district chief, Abdul Jamil Siddiqui, said three civilians including a child were killed and nine others, including women and children wounded during the two-week clashes.
