KABUL activists in central Bamyan province on Tuesday lit candles to express solidarity with victims of a massive landslide in northeastern Badakhshan province, as volunteers started fund-raising campaigns in northern Kunduz and western Farah provinces.
More than 2,500 people were likely killed after the landslide buried around 300 houses in the Abi Barik village of Argon district on Friday, leaving thousands displaced.
“Everyone in the country is saddened over the loss of thousands of lives claimed by the calamity,” said the Civil Society and Human Rights Network (CSHRN) head in Bamyan.
Ismail Zaki said they launched on Tuesday a drive to collect money for the affected people.
In Kunduz City, a camp has been established, with passersby donating money for the victims of Badakhshan landslide.
Businessmen, shopkeepers and influential individuals were seen donating money as a group of 20 individuals marched the city’s bazaar to collect cash from people, the deputy governor said.
Hamdullah Danishi said all the money, food stuff, blankets and other necessary materials collected would be sent to Badakhshan.
Another camp for the same purpose has been established in Farah City two days ago, when Governor Mohammad Omar Sherzad donated 100,000 afghanis.
People from far-flung areas also donated money to the camp after arriving in the city.
