AIBAK (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Mines and Petroleum on Wednesday pledged to close dangerous coalmines in Dara-i-Sauf Bala district of northern Baghlan province.
The pledge comes a week after 24 miners were killed and five others wounded when an explosion occurred inside a mine in the district.
Petroleum Minister Mohammad Akbar Barakzai held a meeting with Baghlan governor Khairullah Anush and discussed with him the issue of dangerous mines, according to Mohammad Rafi Rafique, the ministry spokesman.
He said dangerous mines would be identified and closed, adding the ministry planned to launch an unawareness campaign regarding illegal coal extractions.
Unskilled residents have long been unlawfully extracting coal from mines in Samangan.
