KABUL (Pajhwok): Triggered by torrential rains, floods killed three people and washed away hundreds of houses in Baghlan, Bamyan and Badakhshan provinces on Thursday, officials said.
A man and a woman were killed when the roof of their house collapsed as a result of flooding that hit four municipality districts of Pul-i-Khumri, the capital of northern Baghlan province.
Deputy Governor Abdul Qadim told Pajhwok Afghan News rescue teams had been sent to the affected areas to evacuate trapped people and deliver initial assistance to the displaced.
Pir Mohammad, a resident of Pul-i-Khumri, said the floods had destroyed his home. But they managed to leave before their house was inundated. The family was currently living with relatives, he added.
An 18 years old girl was killed and dozens of houses were destroyed in the Sigan district of central Bamyan province. Hundreds of acres of crops were washed away.
Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) head for Bamyan Mohammad Rifat Raza said rescuers were trying to evacuate the marooned people and deliver aid to them.
Overnight rains damaged dozens of houses and link roads in the Warduj district of Badakhshan province. The district chief, Dawlat Mohammad Khawar, said six villages were affected by floods.
