ISLAMABAD (Pajhwok): At least five people were killed and 14 others wounded in a suicide bomb attack in the capital of Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Sunday, officials said.
The suicide bomber entered Shahibagh Stadium in Peshawar and fired gunshots, prompting security personnel to retaliate. The bomber detonated his explosives near a mosque inside the stadium.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Najeebur Rehman told reporters the blast was carried out by a suicide bomber when tribesmen from Tirah Valley had gathered to register for ration and repatriation.
An emergency was declared and additional staff called in by the administration of the Lady Reading Hospital, where the victims were evacuated for medical treatment. Hospital sources confirmed receiving five bodies.
Bomb Disposal Squad official Zahid Khan said eight to 10 kilograms of explosives were used in the suicide jacket, with pellets and iron pieces that caused damage.
The 22-year-old suicide bomber entered the stadium posing as an internally displaced person. He detonated his jacket. Police cordoned off the area and started collecting evidence from the site.
