KABUL (Pajhwok): President Hamid Karzai on Friday congratulated the Baharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on winning a landslide in India’s parliamentary elections
Preliminary results and media projections at the climax of the six-week election showed the Narendra Modi-led party on track for the first parliamentary majority by a single party in 30 years.
“We accept defeat. We are ready to sit in the opposition,” Congress leader and spokesman Rajeev Shukla told reporters at party headquarters in New Delhi as preliminary results trickled in.
President Karzai hailed India as Afghanistan’s longtime friend, hoping Kabul-Delhi relations would see a further boost during the incoming BJP government.
In a statement from his office, Karzai wished Modi and the people of India all happiness and prosperity.
