Karzai, Sharif confer on on border security

ISLAMABAD (Pajhwok): Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry and prime minister’s special envoy Mahmood Khan Achakzai met Afghan President Hamid Karzai to formally convey Islamabad’s request for cooperation in the ongoing military offensive in North Waziristan Agency.

The Prime Minister’s House said Karzai telephoned Sharif on Thursday evening and the two leaders discussed the need for appropriate measures to prevent the insurgents fleeing the tribal region from sneaking into Afghanistan.

Karzai assured his interlocutor that the Afghan government would beef up border security to block the possible infiltration of militants. Sharif also urged NATO surveillance.

In Kabul, the Presidential Palace confirmed the telephonic conversation. It said Karzai and Sharif conferred on the visit of Achakzai and Aizaz in connection with the Waziristan offensive.

Sharif agreed with Kabul’s proposal for combating all terrorists without any discrimination, a statement from Karzai’s office said. An Afghan delegation would visit Pakistan and deliver to the host leaders the president’s letter outlining his government’s views.  

Last week, the Pakistan Army said the Afghan National Army and Afghan Border Police had been requested to seal the border on their side to facilitate elimination of terrorists fleeing across the border.

“They have also been requested to initiate immediate measures to eliminate terrorists and their sanctuaries in Kunar, Nuristan and other areas of Afghanistan,” the army said.
