KABUL (Pajhwok): The Change and Continuity team, led by Ashraf Ghani, on Tuesday claimed the Reform and Unanimity team had appointed foreigners as observers for the ongoing vote audit, a claim Abdullah’s camp dismissed.

A member of the Change and Continuity team, Halim Fidaee, told Pajhwok Afghan News that they had evidence showing Abdullah had appointed a number of foreigners as observers to work in his interest.

“Today at 5pm, representatives of both the candidates shared their views with the UNAMA deputy head. As the Change and Continuity team members complained about the appointment of foreigners as observers by Abdullah, a foreigner came in and told the UNAMA official that Ghani’s observers are committing fraud in the audit process,” Fidaee said.

He said when Sadat Naderi, another member of the Change and Continuity team, asked the foreigner to identify himself and show the observer’s card, he refused. After insistence by Naderi, the foreigner admitted he represented Abdullah’s team, according to Fidaee, who claimed the foreigner had no card.

“According to our information, Abdullah has appointed up to 30 foreigners as observers on his side. These foreigners are mistaken for UNAMA or other foreign observers when they are present during the audit of votes but in fact they are Abdullah’s men,” he said.

Fidaee said when he asked Reform and Unanimity observer Samiullah Fanah about the foreigner, he said they attempted to get an observer’s card for him but failed. He said Fanah told him they would try to register the foreigner as international observer.

Reform and Unanimity spokesman Mujibur Rahman, however, rejected the claim that they had appointed foreigners as their observers, saying they did not need foreigners in this regard.

“Today, a foreign national accompanied Fanah to the election commission office in order to obtain an observer card, but it did not happen. The problem created when the foreigner was noticed having entered the office without card.”

Rahman said the foreigner was neither their representative nor observer.

Pajhwok tried to seek comments from Fanah about the issue, but failed.
