GARDEZ (Pajhwok): One person was killed and 107 others wounded in traffic accidents during Eid holidays in southeastern Paktia province, medics said on Friday.
There were a total of 62 accidents that occurred on the first, second and third day of Eidul Fitre and all the mishaps involved motorcycles, said Dr. Haya Gul Paktin, the provincial civil hospital director.
He said most of the injured received timely treatment and only seven of them were referred to Kabul for sustaining severe injuries.
Motorcycles are the major source of conveyance in Paktia, where mostly young people use them to visit homes of relatives during Eid days.
Residents of Gardez, the provincial capital, blame accidents involving motorcyclists on carless and speedy driving.
“We often see the youth driving so fast and carelessly. Many have died and injured this way,” said Noor Wali, a resident.
He said the government should keep vigil on motorcyclists exhibiting carelessness in order to prevent them from causing injuries to themselves and others.
The latest accident took place a day earlier in the Teri Kandaw area, but it involved a car, leaving four persons, including two women, dead and five others, all men, injured.
