JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Five local police members were killed after insurgents stormed their posts in the Chaparhar district of eastern Nangarhar province early Sunday morning, an official said.
Another six local policemen were injured when the insurgents attacked their posts in Hafizan, Gambil and Khan Kalew areas, with the clashes stretching into the noon, said Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, the provincial government spokesman.
He told Pajhwok Afghan News further details about the incident would be available later. He said military reinforcements were on their way to the district when came under a bomb attack, leaving five soldiers and three civilians injured.
Nangarhar Civil Hospital director Dr. Hamayun Zaheer told Pajhwok Afghan News they had been delivered one dead body and 10 injured people — seven security personnel and three civilians — from the scene.
A tribal elder in Chaparhar district Pir Asad said the fighting had come to an end. He said five members of a local resident named Lala Jan were injured when a mortar shell hit their home during the clashes between insurgents and security forces. The house of another man, Akbar, was also hit by a mortar, killing his daughter, the elder said.
A Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the attack on local police personnel, saying the forces suffered heavy losses.
