Work on housing project begins in Bamyan

BAMYAN CITY (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) plans to construct 1,000 residential buildings for homeless people central Bamyan province, an official said on Thursday.

The foundation stone of the project was laid on Wednesday by the Urban Development Minister Hassan Abdulhai in the Dasht-i-Essa Khan area of Bamyan city.

Abdulhai told reporters the project would be implemented in accordance with relevant rules and international standard. The scheme covering 30 acres of land would provide housing facility for 1,000 families.

Costing $40 million, the project is being funded by the ministry, he said, adding: “The scheme involving government and non-governmental investors will resolve residential problems of Bamyan residents,”

The project would take five years and houses would be distributed at affordable rates homeless people, promised the minister, who explained tourists would also benefit from the facility.

In addition, master plans for 20 other projects had also been finalised by the MoUD for Bamyan province, he announced. The plans include construction of buildings and residential houses.

Residents of Bamyan praised work on the new project as a step toward resolving the problems of the homeless.

But Mohammad Nabi, one of the 300 cave dwellers, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “People like me will not be able to have homes of their own even if 10,000 buildings are constructed; we don’t have any money.”

Governor Ghulam Ali Wahdat hoped implementation of the new project would help residents overcome their residential problems. He said only needy residents would benefit from the houses.
