Protesters demand early election results

KABUL activists on Thursday staged a protest against inordinate delay in announcement of the election results, asking the presidential runners to immediately act to defuse the tension.

More than a hundred civil society activists marched from Shahr-I-Naw Park to the Zanbaq Square of the capital, saying that the delay in announcing the results was against the interest of the country.

The audit process was formally launched on July 7 and the Independent Election Commission (IEC) announced it would take up to four weeks to complete the recount process. It is now more than a month and the results are yet be unveiled.

Mohammad Jawadi, a civil society activist, said that some individuals tried to paint an ethnic colour to the election and created rifts between the two presidential candidates.

Without naming anyone, he said: “Some elements do not think about our country and people rather they only think about their vested interests. It is nothing but a pre-planned political game against the nation,”

Another protestor, Maryam Ibrahimkhel said: “We want international community to take action to cordially end the election standoff.” A delay in results of election has caused joblessness, chaos and insecurity.

Abdullah, another participant of the protest, vowed to continue the protest until the election related tensions was resolved.

The protesters adopted a resolution, saying the candidates should help end the uncertainty. They asked the government, the international community and the election commissions to announce the final results as soon as possible.
