AIBAK/BAMYAN CITY (Pajhwok): A resident gunned down a police post commander guarding a coalmine in northern Samangan province, an official said on Saturday.
The police officer, Assadullah Akhundzada, was killed on Friday night when he was asleep inside the post in Dara-i-Sauf Bala district, the district chief, Ahmad Ali Hussaini, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the commander was killed as a result of carelessness and lack of bodyguards, adding that Akhundzada had named his killer as Hassan Ali, a local resident.
The circumstances leading to the murder are yet to be known but the alleged murderer has been arrested and being investigated, Hussaini said.
Elsewhere, a female university student in central Bamyan province committed suicide on the campus allegedly due to her poor family condition.
The 20-year-old Muhaddasa was a second year student at the faculty of social science. She ended her life by eating venom on Friday.
Provincial police chief, Lt. Col. Mohammad Ali Lakzai, told Pajhwok Afghan News the student had eaten poison on Wednesday and was untreatable when taken to hospital.
Before her death, Muhaddasa had told officials that her father was languishing in Bamyan jail and her family suffered from extreme poverty.
But a local resident Ghulam Ali suspected domestic violence behind the extreme step.
Provincial crime branch chief, Chaman Ali, said they wanted to transfer the body to Kabul for examination but residents stressed her burial.
