The Cabinet orders came hard on the heels of a Pajhwok Afghan News report regarding the unabated hunting of rare species of birds in central Bamyan province and their smuggling to Pakistan.
A meeting, chaired by President Hamid Karzai, ordered the Ministry of Economy was directed to scrap all hunting licences. The MoI and NDS were directed to ensure implementation of presidential decrees in this regard.
Issued a decade ago, a presidential directive banned the hunting of certain threatened animals and birds and ordered strict against perpetrators.
The Council of Ministers asked the Interior Ministry and the National Environment Protection Agency (NEPA) prevent the hunting and sale of birds in Band-i-Amir, a major tourist draw, in Bamyan.
