MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): One hundred tonnes of flour, delivered by Russia in aid to Afghanistan, has perished at the Hairatan port in northern Balkh province, an official said on Friday.
Zikrullah Aryan, administrative head of the port, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Russia had donated the flour for distribution to needy people two years ago. The commodity had since been lying in port stores.
“The 100 tonnes of flour should have been distributed to the poor and victims of natural disaster. But it has perished now,” he said, adding no government organ had so far asked them about the aid.
Aryan explained they were responsible for only storing, not delivering, such items. The issue has been reported to the governor’s office, which is yet to respond to the port authorities.
