All governors to work in acting capacity

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Dr. Ashraf Ghani on Thursday directed all provincial governors to serve in acting capacity until their replacements were announced.

The president issue the new under article 64 of the constitution, the Cabinet Secretariat said in a statement. The latest presidential order says:

1. All provincial chief executives will continue in acting capacity till the appointment of new governors;
2. The acting governors are barred from making new appointments and ordering dismissals.
3. A day ealier, the president stressed the need for permanent budgets for provinces and the appointment of qualified individuals as governors.

   At a meeting with the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) chief and other officials, Ahmadzai called for upholding merit in all appointments.

   He suggested benchmarks set for gubernatorial appointments be set. The president promised he would constantly stay in touch with governors to speed up resolution of people’s problems and improve the quality of governance at the provincial level.
