GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Wheat production has increased by 12 percent in southern Ghazni province, the director of agriculture said on Thursday.
Sultan Husain Abbas Yar told Pajhwok Afghan News there was a decline in wheat production last year because of a crop disease, but this year’s yield was higher.
Last year, he recalled, unripe seed and the use of expired chemical fertilizers caused a decline in the production level but farmers received quality seed in 20015.
However, growers chose improved seeds after attending different workshops on agriculture. Additionally, the government distributed fertilizers to farmers.
“I have harvested 8400 kg of wheat, compared with last year’s yield 5,600kg from the same land,” said a smiling Noorullah, a farmer from Deh Yak district.
The grower complained only influential farmers were given fertilizers and seeds last year, but he also received the farm inputs this year.
Abdul Khaliq, a resident of Giru district, also had a higher yield from his eight acres of land. “I have got 12,600kg of wheat, much higher than last year’s production.”
He claimed the irrigation system was of little use to farmers, asking the government to explore alternatives. The existing irrigation channels had little water, he explained.
Rahmatullah, hailing from Qarabagh district, praised the government for distributing seeds and fertilizers to farmers. He hoped the distribution of fertilizers, seeds and holding of awareness workshops would continue.
Officials in Khost, Logar and Takhar have confirmed an increase in wheat production this year.
