HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): An Afghan National Army (ANA) officer has been sentenced to death on murder charges in western Herat province, an official said on Friday.
Military Court Judge Brig. Gen. Mohammad Sabir Hakimi, handing down the verdict at the Zafar Corps compound on Thursday, ruled the ANA officer had been found guilty of killing his colleague.
The judgment was based on Article 267 of the Penal Code, Gen. Hakimi said, adding the convict would also have to pay the victim’s family 140,000 afs in compensation.
The accused had access to defence lawyer and other legal rights, the judge said, explaining the convict — a lieutenant — had the right to appeal the punishment.
Zafar Corps spokesman Najibullah Hussaini said the ANA officer had killed his colleague on June 20 this year. The verdict, if endorsed by the appeal court, will be enforced after being signed by the president.
