KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): The deputy governor of southern Kandahar province, Abdul Qayum Patyal, on Sunday died in hospital of serious wounds he sustained in a gun attack by unknown assailants, a doctor confirmed.
Earlier, the governor’s spokesman said unknown gunmen sprayed bullets at Patyal when he was visiting the Kandahar University in the provincial capital, Kandahar City, at about 7pm, seriously wounding him.
Samim Khpalwak told Pajhwok Afghan News Patyal was taken to the Mirwais hospital in a critical condition and promised further details later.
Some sources also said Patyal had succumbed to his wounds, but others denied confirming it.
But a doctor on duty at the Mirwais hospital, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Patyal had breathed his last.
Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) spokesman on his Facebook wall wrote that Patyal had died of his wounds and expressed his deep grief over his demise.
