JALALABAD/TALUQAN (Pajhwok): Nine insurgents, including a commander were killed, five injured and nearly a dozen others captured in eastern Nangarhar province, police said on Sunday. Elsewhere, a female university student committed suicide in northern Takhar province.

Nangarhar police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal told Pajhwok Afghan News Afghan Special Security Forces conducted an operation in the Batikot district from 3am last night until 2pm this afternoon.

The operation resulted in the killing of nine rebels, including a commander Shamsullah. Five others insurgents were injured and 11 more detained alive, he said.

Four bomb-rigged cars and as many motorcycle bombs were seized during the operation and later defused, the police spokesman said.

A resident of the area, Haji Akbar, told Pajhwok Afghan News the operation involving ground and air forces did not cause casualties to civilians, but many roads remained blocked.

He said the Taliban commander, Shamsullah, killed in the operation was a notorious person.

In Takhar, a 22-year-old woman, who was a fourth year student of the engineering faculty, has committed suicide by shooting her with a pistol.
