LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Five policemen and a militant were killed in an armed clash in the Marja district of southern Helmand province, the town’s administrative chief said on Sunday.
Capt. Mehar Dil told Pajhwok Afghan News the gunbattle erupted when insurgents mounted an attack on a police check-post in the Tarkha Nawar area of the district.
A notorious Taliban commander, Shafiq, was among the dead. Another four rebels were wounded in the firefight, the official said.
Locals said the check-post had been attacked repeatedly for the last several days but authorities had been unable to dispatch reinforcements to ward off the militant threat.
Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said six policemen had been killed in the clash and militants had snatched weapons from the security personnel.
