FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Eight districts of northeastern Badakhshan province have been cut off from the capital Faizabad after heavy snowfall blocked roads, an official said on Monday.
Mohammad Ashaq Yaqubi of the Natural Disaster Management Department told Pajhwok Afghan News Shahr-e-Bozurg, Arghanch Khwah, Shaghnan, Mahmy, Nusy, Shuky, Kofab and Khwahan had been disconnected from the capital.
He warned if the snowfall continued, roads in three other districts of Yamgan, Karan-o-Manjan and Tagab would also be blocked. The heavy snowfall started yesterday.
He said in remote districts a Norwegian NGO and Germany’s GIZ had set up emergency warehouses containing tents, first-aid packages and blankets that would be distributed to the needy.
However, he added, food had not been transferred to these warehouses, a responsibility of the Afghan Red Crescent Society Food Programme. This has raised concerns among officials.
Jalaluddin, a resident of Khwahan, said in winters they did not have any contact with Faizabad for six months, when food prices tended to double. Pregnant women centers, he added.
Deputy Governor Gul Mohammad Baidar said the Natural Disaster Management Department had allocated 3 million afghanis for clearing the roads, which was enough only for two months.
