PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): The provincial council (PC) of northern Baghlan province finally elected its chief unopposed on Monday, about a month after the council was sworn-in.
But provincial Independent Election Commission (IEC) chief, Amanullah Habibi, rejected the election as against the rules. He said the PC head election without being challenged by a rival candidate was not acceptable.
Most of the 15-member body members had been absent over the past one month, making it not possible to elect the administration board.
Safdar Mohasani was elected as the council chief with nine votes. Two weeks earlier, Firozuddin Imaq was elected as deputy head and Samiuddin Nazir as secretary of the council.
Baghlan residents said they had been hoping the new council would resolve their disputes, but the delay in electing the chief eclipsed their hopes.
Earlier, residents had staged a protest demonstration against the PC members and blocked the Kabul-Pul-i-Khumri highway for hours. The protesters locked the IEC office as well.
