Dozens of rebels eliminated in Kunduz offensive

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): As many as 12 security personnel and 56 rebels have been killed and 63 others wounded in a clearing operation that ended on Sunday in the Imam Sahib district of northern Kunduz province, an official said.

The offensive was carried out by Afghan National Army (ANA), police, Public Order Police (POP) and Afghan Local Police (ALP) personnel, police officer Col. Mohammad Safar said.

He added some notorious rebels commanders were among the dead insurgents. At least 30 villages were purged of rebels.  

District chief Amanuddin Quraishi, told Pajhwok Afghan News the clearing operation began four days ago, when the fighters tried to storm the ALP training academy in Tashguzar locality.

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed killing 30 security officials and conquering four check-posts in the area. However, he said nothing about the offensive.

Residents of Imam Sahib welcomed the clearing operation and demanded durable security in their area. Firoz, a dweller, said the operation was purely against militants and civilians were not hurt.

Officials promised more security check-post would be step up in dangerous areas to make sure the safety of civilians.
