KABUL on Monday approved cancellation of second nationality by Salahuddin Rabbani, whose nomination for foreign minister had earlier been rejected by the lower house.
One of the seven cabinet picks rejected by the house for having dual nationality, Rabbani is the second nominee who has surrendered his foreign citizenship to be accepted as minister-designate.
International Affairs Commission head Abdul Qadir Zazai told Pajhwok Afghan News the panel evaluating transcripts of ministers-designate, had approved Rabbani’s documents after he gave up his British nationality.
Zazai said the documents of Rabbani would be referred to a general session of the assembly to make a final decision on whether or not to consider him for a confidence vote.
Noorul Haq Ulumi, Sadat Naderi and Salahuddin Rabbani have cancelled their second nationality and their documents have been shared with the Wolesi Jirga.
Under Article 72 of the Constitution, ministers should have only Afghan nationality, but Wolesi Jirga has the authority to accept or reject them.
