Flood affected families demand riverside embankment

SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): The residents of Khwaja Duko district of northwestern Jawzjan province on Thursday warned their homes were still vulnerable to seasonal floods if steps were not taken to protect the riversides of the district.

In April 2014, as mnay as 70 people lost their lives, more than a thousand houses destroyed and nearly 6,000 families affected by floods in Darzab, Qoshtapa, Khwaja Duko, Aqcha and Faizabad districts of Jawzjan.

Most of the affected families belonged to the Khwaja Duko district.

Jumma Khan, a resident of Itroq village in Khwaja Duko district, said the level of water close to the district increases during rain or snowfalls which could cause more catastrophes.

He demanded the officials concerned to embank the riversides and construct a concrete wall up to 1 meter high to counter the floods in future.

“The floods will start again and the population can be affected if the government fails to adopt preemptive measures,” he warned.
