FEROZKOH/MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Heavy snowfalls blocked roads in many districts of Ghor and Faryab provinces causing a sharp rise in prices of food items and other commodities, officials said on Tuesday.
Eng. Khalil Noor, director public works department in western Ghor, said the snowfall started Monday morning, disconnecting roads between Tolak, Dawlina, Shahrak, Saghar, Teora and Pasaband districts with the provincial capital.
In some localities of the province received up to 60 centimeters of snowfall causing avalanche and blocking Ghor-Kabul Highway, he said, adding that efforts were underway to clear roads for traffic.
Gul Mohammad, a resident of Dawlina district, said he came to the provincial capital to buy food items but could not go home because of closure of the road. “The government should step up efforts to clear highways and ensure provision of food items,” he added.
Meanwhile, an ailing woman lost her life due to heavy snowfalls in Kohistan district of northern Faryab. Imamyar Taqwa, Kohistan district chief, said the lady had appendicitis and was being transferred to Maimana on a horse back. She could not be brought to the city due to 3 metres snow, he added.
