KABUL (Pajhwok): Fresh avalanches led to a halt of efforts at setting up emergency power supply lines to central capital Kabul in the northern Salang area of Baghlan province, the power utility said on Saturday.

Previous avalanches had damaged power cables carrying electricity to Kabul from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in northern Baghlan province.

Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat has previously said emergency power lines would be set up until Friday or Saturday to add 170 megawatts of electricity to the system and meet 80 percent of the city’s needs.

But the company in a statement issued here on Saturday said at least 10 fresh avalanches hit both northern and southern Salang, halting the repair effort.

The power utility said their teams of engineers and crews were in the area and they would resume their work even if the situation improved for a while.

Kabul is imported 300 megawatts of electricity from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Kabul citizens currently avail electricity for a few hours a day after a severe snowstorm uprooted three power pylons and damaged six others in the northern Salang about 12 days ago.
