JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Another family lost 10 members when the roof of their house caved in due to continuous rain in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Sunday.
The deaths in Dara-i-Noor district on Saturday night came hours after a family in the Sherzad district lost eight members to a similar incident.
The governor’s spokesman, Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, told Pajhwok Afghan News the latest fatalities also included women and children. He said the roof fell in following incessant rains in the area.
Zabit Aamir, a provincial council member, said the incident happened in Shimal valley. It has been raining for the last few days, he said, adding most of the victims were children and a woman was among the injured.
He urged the government to dispatch relief supplies to the region urgently because residents of the area were poor and lived in mud brick homes, which weaken in rains.
Elsewhere, two members of a family died when a rockslide rolled down a mountain and hit a house in northern Badghis province.
The incident took place in Ghiraq Shura area of Maqur district last night, said Masaab Hamid, Natural Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) head in Baghlan.
Nearly 300 people lost their lives to recent avalanches, flash floods and landslides that left scores of others injured in different parts of the country, with central Panjsher province emerging the worst-hit.
