NEILI (Pajhwok): A local official said on Wednesday efforts were underway to rescue 20 drivers and food trucks taken hostage by Taliban militants in central Uruzgan province.

The militants stopped the 20 trucks on their way from Kandahar to Kajran district and took the drivers to an unknown location on Wednesday.

Kajran district chief, Zamin Poya, told Pajhwok Afghan News the truckers had been shifted to the Sarab area of Charchino district in central Uruzgan province.

All drivers are residents of Daikundi province, according to Poya, who said local elders and influential individuals were trying to negotiate with the kidnappers on freeing the hostages.

The Taliban have not yet commented on the issue that has also been shared with Uruzgan officials, who have promised cooperation.

A month back, 30 passengers were kidnapped on the Kabul-Kandahar highway by unknown gunmen in the Shah Joy district of Zabul province. Their fate is still unknown.
