KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Construction of two retaining walls — costing seven million afghanis — was initiated in the capital of southern Khost province on Thursday, the governor’s spokesperson said
Mubarez Zadran told Pajhwok Afghan News the walls were being constructed with the support of Rural Rehabilitation Department and Stability in Key Areas (SIKA).
The project will protect around 2500 acres of land from flood. “One retaining wall is 300 metres long and the other 200 metres. The scheme will be completed in a month’s time,” Zadran added.
Director of Rural Rehabilitation Eng. Mohammad Usman said: “The walls will not only protect agricultural land but also provide job opportunities to people.”
Said Amin Shah, a local resident, said they lost crops on thousands of acres of land every year to floods and could not afford to protect their lands. He hoped their crops and homes would become safe.
