Afghan conflict: NATO diplomats for political solution

KABUL conflict “to reach their goals through political means in order to restore lasting peace in the war-torn country.”

The diplomats from the United States, Germany, Italy and Turkey, who called on Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah at his office in Kabul, said “only real, sincere and multifaceted cooperation of regional countries could help counter extremism and terrorism in the region, a statement from the CEO’s office said.

They called as crucial this year’s NATO defence ministerial meeting on Afghanistan in Brussels, where NATO is headquartered, and sought Afghanistan’s active participation in the summit.

For his part, Abdullah said with the new leadership, Afghanistan had started moving in the right direction and at this stage, NATO’s renewed support remained basic requirement.

The CEO said the Afghan government had launched its efforts for peace talks, but the efforts would only give results when regional countries strongly combat terrorism and stop aiding terrorists.

He said Afghanistan spared no effort in achieving peace and hoped that real cooperation from the parties concerned would help make the effort a success for the sake of stability in Afghanistan.

Abdullah said the unity government was working to be able to answer the nation and besides many other areas, the fight on corruption remained their top priority.
