JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Counternarcotics Minister Salamat Azimi said on Friday that anti-drug campaign was slow-paced due to worst law and order situation.
Azimi told Pajhwok Afghan News during her visit to eastern Nangarhar that she had worked out strategy to follow. “Rural rehabilitation and development should provide support to the ministry to find an alternate source for income of people,” she remarked.
Hajj Affairs should support to discourage poppy cultivation, she stressed.
The ministry reported that poppy was cultivated on 254,000 hectares of land while 190,000 hectares of land was only cultivated in eastern Nangarhar. “In fact, the campaign against narcotics was extremely slow-moving,” she said, adding that huge amount of poppy was cultivated in the country.
Nangarhar Governor Salim Khan Kundozi said the ministry should provide assistance and alternative to farmers in the province to avoid poppy cultivation.
The poppy cultivation was reduced to zero percent few years ago which had been increased since 2013.
