Kandahar governor says govt-clerics gap being bridged

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): The governor of southern Kandahar province on Wednesday said the gap between religious scholars and the government would be overcome by giving them increased representation in government departments.

Dr. Humayun Azizi, speaking at a weekly security meeting, said religious scholars had little presence in the government as earlier.

He said it was religious scholars’ responsibility to work for the wellbeing of their country and people.

He said a coordination meeting would be called with religious scholars to take them on board against the enemies of the people.

Azizi also directed security officials in districts to establish more security posts and resolve the needs of security personnel.

Brig. Gen. Daud Shah Wafa, the 205 Military Corps commander, said: “Afghan forces have always sought good relations with neighbouring countries, but if they want to harm our forces, then they would resist.”

Kandahar deputy police chief Brig. Gen. Rahmatullah Atrafi said 16 insurgents were killed, seven wounded and two others detained this week.

The NDS and public order police officials told the meeting 17 insurgents were killed and many weapons and ammunition seized during their operations this week.
