Elderly man from Wardak wants only surviving son freed

MAIDAN SHAHR (Pajhwok): “I have lost three sons in separate incidents, rendering my two daughters-in-law widows. My fourth and only surviving son has been in detention,” an elderly man lamented on Friday..

“My house turned into a vale of misery where no one would like to live,” remarked the grey-bearded man in his 60s, sobbing out sobbing the sorrowful tale of his family..

Abdul Nabi told Pajhwok Afghan News he had mortgaged his two acres peach orchard for a 400,000 afghanis loan to sent his two sons — aged 24 and 22 years — to Iran in search of a better future.

Both of them were killed by Iranian border guards, leaving behind 18 and 20 years old widows and three children. Joy has since been eluding the ill-fated family, for which life has become too heavy a burden to carry.

“I had two other sons, one of them died in a traffic accident on the Kabul-Ghazni highway. And 18-year-old Islam-ud-Din has been jailed on the trumped-up charge of being a militant.”

“I buried the three sons close to my house. My wife and I are now praying for early deaths to be buried near their graves,” says Nabi, who earned only 17,000 afghanis by working as a labourer on his mortgaged farm.

His entire wheat crop was lost to floods this year. “I am a wretched family head hearing weeping widows.” He requests local officials to release his son to support the family.
