KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): A female employee of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in southern Kandahar province on Monday, an official said.
Samim Khpalwak, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the woman was gunned down in the Arg Bazaar area of the fourth police district in the morning.
He said full details were yet to be available, but an investigation into the incident was underway. The attackers managed to flee, with police trying to capture the killers, he added.
Meanwhile, a statement from UNAMA confirmed losing one of their employees in the attack.
“UNAMA is angered by the assassination of a staff member today in the southern city of Kandahar” the statement said, adding investigation into the incident was underway.
A credible source, wishing anonymity, the slain woman as Toor Paykai. He said the victim was working with UNAMA. The source added Paykai came under attack while heading to her office.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
