GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Local security officials on Tuesday said they had been informed of a US military helicopter crashing in a mountainous area in the southeastern province of Paktia.

Paktia police chief Maj. Gen. Zalmai Oryakhel told Pajwhok Afghan News the US helicopter was believed to have crashed in insecure and mountainous areas and it would take some time to investigate the claims.

Residents of Kohseen area of Syed Karam district said they had seen the wreckage of a helicopter that fell down in the evening. Syedullah, one of the residents, said US helicopters had been circling the area.

The Taliban claimed to have shot down a gunship helicopter of foreign troops in Kohseen area at around 5pm.

But NATO said none of their helicopters had crashed in the country and they had no report regarding the crash in Paktia.

Two US servicemembers were among five killed Sunday when a British helicopter crashed in capital Kabul.

The other dead were two British servicemembers and a French civilian contractor in what the NATO-led military mission described as a “non-hostile incident.”

Local security officials said the helicopter struck a monitoring balloon as it was landing.

On Monday, two Afghan Air Force helicopters crashed separately in central Logar and Bamyan provinces.
